Flood Insurance

The National Flood Insurance Program is a pre-disaster flood mitigation and insurance protection program designed to reduce the exalting cost of disasters. The National Flood Insurance Program is  a voluntary program providing a quid pro quo approach to floodplain management. That is, federally backed flood insurance is available to residents and business owners in communities that agree to adopt and adhere to sound flood mitigation measures that guide development in its floodplains. All Centre Region resident are eligible to purchase federally backed flood insurance.

 

Many lenders and banking institutions require homeowners to purchase such insurance. Others, realizing their vulnerability have opted to purchase in addition to their homeowner policies.

 

Important facts:

Homeowner policies do not insure against flooding or damage from flooding

Flood insurance is a separate, specific policy for flooding only

Each flood insurance policy is fully backed by the federal government

Flood insurance is usually purchased from commercial agents

FEMA is responsible for flood zone maps throughout the U.S.
